French

Children have an innate curiosity and enthusiasm for language learning. At Daneshill the desire to understand how to communicate in French is harnessed from Year 2 where all pupils are actively involved in a programme of lively listening and speaking activities following the proven La Jolie Ronde methodology.

Basic language skills are revised throughout the course, with an increasing emphasis on developing and enhancing reading and writing skills. Grammatical aspects are introduced and reinforced as the 13+ Curriculum develops, culminating in the Common Entrance examination where all four skills are assessed. This provides a firm foundation for subsequent GCSE success.

A stimulating learning environment is promoted through a series of language themed events throughout the year. The older pupils are actively encouraged to guide the younger members of the school to demonstrate their language skills through performance and role play.

In keeping with the school ethos we are keen to promote effective language learning both inside and outside the classroom. Perhaps the best example of this is our Year 6 residential trip to Normandy in the Summer Term. This week long trip enhances the pupils’ cultural awareness and provides the perfect opportunity for them to practise their French in an authentic context. The programme of events offers strong cross-curricular links with other departments within the school. Visits to the WW2 battlefields and sites of historical interest run alongside an exciting range of adventurous pursuits designed to complement the activities undertaken in ALS. The trip benefits the pupils academically and socially and always features as one of the highlights of their time at Daneshill.
