Maths
Mathematics is a not always the favourite subjects on the curriculum for pupils but we at Daneshill try very hard to dispel any fears there may be. In our lessons we work hard to promote enjoyment and interest in learning with varied activities and practical sessions.
The main aim of the Mathematics department is to establish enthusiasm for learning. We want the children to be happy to talk Maths and to question and investigate thus extending their understanding. The different areas in the curriculum; number, shape and space, measure and data are taught throughout the school and each year we look to build and extend their knowledge further. This approach ensures there is consolidation and extension throughout the child’s school life. The ‘dreaded’ algebra gets the full treatment in year 7 and 8.
Daneshill has created its own method of improving and testing the knowledge of the basic tools of this subject. Every week all the children in years 3 to 6 are tested on tables, number bonds, mathematical language and knowledge of relationships between units. These tests are graded and each child works to improve their own scores. The children have a love hate relationship with these tests, they complain when they have them but complain when not!
Every year we organize an Inter House Maths Challenge that tests the knowledge and speed of recall of tables, combining multiplications as well as divisions, for year 3 to the top of the school. It is exciting to see how the children rise to these kinds of challenges; tables have never been more fun!
By inspiring children with the desire to learn we hope to develop their understanding of the subject and in doing so make maths meaningful and relevant to their everyday lives.
