Under 7s Shine in Football Fixtures

Girls' U7s

On Monday 1st February twenty four boys and girls turned out from Years 1 and 2 to play Thorngrove at football. The eighteen boys from Year 2 were split into two mixed ability teams and put in sterling performances after very little football this term due to the weather. Both games were played side by side on the astro pitch, which made for a great atmosphere with lots of parents from both teams coming along to support. Team 1 played some fantastic football and finished the game comfortable winners with a 7 – 2 score line that flattered the visitors. Team 2 on the other hand seemed to be disrupted by the rolling subs system and unfortunately lost the game 1 – 7. Both teams can be very proud of their efforts though.

On the other pitch the Under 7 girls put in the performance of the day. With half of the team having never kicked a football and Thorngrove playing football as part of their girls’ games programme it was safe to say that the book makers did not have Daneshill as their odds on favourites. However, after drafting in three girls from Year 1 we managed to put together a 6 aside team that had potential. After an evenly balanced first half that saw Hannah Smith pull off some great saves in goal and Bella Collins and India Burton-Brown defend courageously, the teams went into the half time break at 0 – 0. Following some ‘tinkering’ from the management the second half was a one sided affair and saw Daneshill run in 3 nil winners after goals from Poppy Pugh, Scarlett Longfield and Hannah Smith. Special mention must also be made to Rakel Gunnarsson who ran all over the pitch and showed some impressive skills. Well done to all the girls who played. It certainly looks like there will have to be some more girls’ football fixtures in the future.
