Daneshill 'Do it again' at Roche Court

Roche Court Prize

At the start of term, Years 7 and 8 visited Roche Court Sculpture Park as an introduction to the Annual Schools Competition. The brief was to design a chair, sofa, bench or stool that had been inspired by a work of art, applied art or architecture. With this in mind, the children spent the day observing and sketching the incredible contemporary sculptures on display in the grounds of Roche Court.

On their return to school they set to work designing a chair. The children worked very hard as they only had four weeks to complete the assignment, combining their knowledge of Art and Design and Technology. They researched their chosen artist and produced visuals, annotated with design decisions, material considerations and size proposals. These were then mounted and delivered to Roche Court.

Last week I received an email from Briony Biles, at the Roche Court educational trust to say , ”you’ve done it again!“ . Daneshill School, namely Jack Dainton had won first prize in the junior category. The judges, Matthew Hilton and Sarah Staton had loved his design and Jack will be presented with his prize at the end of the month. Matthew is one of the Uk’s most successful furniture designers and was appointed a Royal Designer for industry in 2005.

There were over 200 entries this year and many of a very high standard, so I would like to congratulate Jack for his superb efforts and well deserved acknowledgement for his chair design, inspired by the work of Anthony Gormly. Jack wrote,” This artwork inspired me because when I was younger I used to sit on my Dad’s lap. I thought I could make a chair to remember and treasure those memories.”

Jack’s work along with designs by Sophie Shearn and Louisa Veitch will be displayed in the education centre at Roche Court.
