The Nursery takes children from approximately 3 years old until the summer before they join reception at the age of 4 years old.
Nursery sessions are as follows:
All day: 8.30am – 3.30pm (including a cooked lunch with the main school)
Morning: 8.30am – 11.30am (or until 12.30, to include lunch)
Afternoon: 12.30 – 3.30pm
We offer wraparound care from 8am to 5pm for children aged 3 upwards.
At Daneshill we believe that children’s learning will develop best through expert supported play and a purposeful theme. In Nursery, children are encouraged to learn through a mixture of child-initiated activities, and some adult led or adult directed activities. These activities include sand and water play, creative activities, themes and projects to promote awareness of the diversity of the world around us, books and music which encourage speaking and listening skills, and a chance to experiment with dough, paste and paper, puzzles and construction toys, to name a few! In addition, Daneshill places a strong emphasis on the importance of physical development and children have access to specialist teachers in Physical Education, gymnastics and, when age appropriate, swimming. We try to be led by the children as much as possible and therefore will centre topics and themes around children’s interests and important events.
The children are split into two groups: Fledglings and Vikings. The children who will be moving to Reception in September become Vikings and those who will remain in the Nursery for another year are Fledglings. The children are only split into these two groups for a small amount of adult led learning each week and only the Vikings attend swimming lessons. For most of the Nursery day the children are free to move around both the indoor and outdoor space to access all the activities and play with everyone. There are some specialist teacher sessions that take place each week such as music and swimming in addition to free flow and circle time activities.
